Humphreys named Diamond Player of the Week
June 2, 2004
Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and the Twin City Valley Press are pleased to present this week's "Diamond Gamer of the Week" to Diana Humphreys of St. Albans High School.
DIAMOND GAMER OF THE WEEK
Diana Humphreys of St. Albans High School
The Lady Red Dragon ace led St. Albans to a Sectional Championship last week. In earning the two pitching victories, Humphreys ran her career pitching record to 19-1. The Lady Red Dragons defeated Nitro in the first game of the sectionals behind Humphreys' 2-2 performance at the plate. She also scored the games only run in a 1-0 victory. She then earned the win in a 6-3 victory that clinched the sectional championship. Humphrey calls the Red Dragons' success a result of "good defense and timely hitting." Head Coach Garber was impressed by Diana's performance last week. "Diana picked up some nice wins for us last week in sectionals. She threw the ball really well, plus she started hitting the ball again at the plate," adds Coach Garber.
The sophomore sensation has had an undefeated season during her 2004 campaign. She currently is 14-0 on the mound which leads the team in pitching wins. She ranks among the leaders in the Kanawha Valley and the Mountain State Athletic Conference with a 0.85 earned run average. Over the last two weeks of the season, Humphreys has also been one of the Red Dragons' hottest hitters. She has hit over .400 during that stretch. Coach Garber is quick to point out Diana's hard work ethic. "She works out year round, which is what it takes to be a top pitcher. She comes out early and throws, and throws in the off season as well. She works hard," comments Garber. Diana also plays soccer at St. Albans High School and had a 4.0 grade point average last report card.
The Lady Red Dragons certainly have enjoyed a successful season this year. They are currently the 4th ranked team in Class AAA, and boast a 25-9 record. Most importantly, they are one of the hottest teams in the State right now as they are 16-1 over their last 17 games. Coach Garber feels the team has come together nicely down the stretch. "We are really playing good ball right now. There are only a handful of teams left playing. We hope to win the Regional Championship and make it to the State Tournament," comments Garber. Humphreys agrees that the rough times for the Red Dragons are behind them now. "Like coach said, we went through some bumps in the season early, and now we have come together lately and our goal is to go all the way," comments Humphreys.
