MARSHALL: Sacha Byous-McConnell, 6-1 MB, Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga CA); Laura Der, 5-10 OH, Floyd Central (Floyd's Knobs IN); Kaitlin Holm, 6-2 OH, Fort Myers (FL); Lexy Kessel, 5-8 DS, Ripley (WV); Dorothy Rahal, 5-7 Libero, Venice (FL); Desirre Wilkerson, 6-0 MB, Manual (Louisville KY)
Comment: Coach Mitch Jacobs says that this recruiting class is the best that Marshall has ever had, even surpassing the class of 2004 that included Kelly-Anne Billingy. This class should move The Herd into the C-USA title hunt and back onto the national scene. Expect immediate contributions from Wilkerson, an extremely quick player in the middle who is good off of one or two feet; and Byous-McConnell, a very big presence in the middle and vastly improved player. Der is a tough, hard-hitting outside with solid ball control and defensive skills. Holm, an All-State Florida middle, will be making a move to the pins to allow her big time arm to be fully utilized. Rahal, who enrolled last spring at Marshall, has already made the Libero role her own. She is fearless and a great leader. Kessel, who was the Gatorade player of the Year in West Virginia,
WVRSN Sports Notes
There are at least 2 other native West Virginia players on the Marshall volleyball roster including Greenbrier East's Lanti Cole and Tyler Consolidated's Cameron Yoho. Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs has always made it a point to go after the best players, including those in the Mountian State.
Coach Jacobs has recruited several more West Virginia players that just haven't worked out but the volleyball wizard still weighs heavy on home state players.
The record recruiting year is even more amazing when one takes a close look at the company Marshall is keeping on that list. Most are much larger universities with much larger recruiting and facilities budgets. Many of the schools on the list are located in "hotbeds" of prep volleyball. Coach Jacobs is to be commended for his continued efforts to bring in the best players as well as push the level of play in West Virginia.
